Better gardening through good design

What is an Edible landscape?

Edible landscapes, also called working landscapes, are backyards, gardens, raised beds, farms, etc. that are used to grow food or other useful plants.

Fruit trees, berries, herbs, vegetables, and livestock all count - but so do flowers (they feed the soul!) & plants grown to enhance biodiversity, feed wildlife, and improve the sustainability of the land.

Vegetables gardens, orchards, and farms are working landscapes, but also…

  • pollinator gardens

  • cut flower gardens

  • container gardens

  • drought resistant native landscaping

  • food forests

  • wildflower plantings

  • herbal medicine garden

  • grass replacement landscaping (less mowing!)

  • accessible gardens

  • sensory gardens

  • wildlife plantings

  • landscaping to mitigate erosion, wind damage, or other natural forces
